WORDPRESS & WEBSITE MAINTENANCE

A better website.
Start with the right fix.

A slow or difficult-to-use WordPress website does not automatically need rebuilding. First identify whether the problem comes from performance, mobile layout, outdated content, or the structure of the site. Good maintenance helps keep it working; a redesign addresses broader changes in direction.

Here is how to investigate a slow website, define a useful maintenance scope, and decide whether to improve or renew your site.

01

Why is your WordPress website slow?

Speed problems can come from large media files, demanding plugins or themes, hosting limitations, and inefficient delivery of page assets. WordPress’s optimisation guidance identifies hosting, configuration, and image size as relevant factors. The right fix depends on what your site is actually loading.

Measure before changing

Test important pages on mobile and desktop. Record the conditions and compare more than one run. Check whether the delay affects all pages or only particular features. A single score is a clue, not a diagnosis.

Review images and embeds

Check image dimensions, compression, and whether large videos or external embeds are necessary on the first screen. Keep useful content, but avoid making visitors download files much larger than their display requires.

Inspect the software

Review which plugins and theme features do useful work and which add unnecessary overhead. Plugin count alone does not tell you the cost of each feature. Test changes on a staging copy rather than disabling features on a live customer journey.

Check hosting and caching

Ask whether hosting resources and cache configuration fit the site. Caching can reduce repeated processing, but dynamic areas need suitable exclusions. Verify that forms, logins, or checkout still work after changes.

For the technical background, see WordPress’s performance guidance.

An Elementor mobile problem may be a layout problem.

Text that overflows, cards that refuse to stack, or excessive spacing can come from responsive settings rather than server speed. Review container direction, typography, visibility, and inherited spacing at the relevant breakpoints. Elementor documents these adjustments in its mobile-layout guide. Test the published layout on real screen sizes as well as in the editor.

02

What belongs in good website maintenance?

Maintenance is an ongoing responsibility, not simply clicking “update”. Define who checks the site, what is covered, how problems are reported, and what happens when a change causes a fault.

  • Backups of both files and database, with a documented and tested recovery process.
  • Review of WordPress, theme, and plugin updates, including compatibility and a rollback plan.
  • Checks of essential journeys: navigation, enquiry forms, booking, and checkout where applicable.
  • Monitoring for downtime or unexpected changes, with a clear person responsible for responding.
  • Review of access permissions, unused accounts, licences, and hosting or domain renewals.
  • Checks for broken links, outdated offers, and content that no longer reflects the business.
  • Performance and mobile-layout reviews when pages or features change.

WordPress explains that a full restore generally needs both the database and site files in its backup documentation. Its monitoring guidance also describes detecting downtime and unexpected changes.

Match the schedule to the website.

A site receiving orders or frequent content changes has different needs from a small brochure site. Agree a routine that fits the risk and activity level, and distinguish routine checks from urgent fixes. Ask whether content edits, performance work, and incident recovery are included or separately quoted.

Updates reduce exposure to known problems, but maintenance cannot guarantee that a site will never fail or face a security incident. No KOAT maintenance package, response time, or uptime guarantee is stated here.

03

Improve your website or commission a redesign?

Start with the business goal and the condition of the existing site. Compare the cost and disruption of targeted work with what a redesign would actually solve. A new visual style alone does not fix weak content, unreliable integrations, or poor performance.

Improve the existing site

Consider focused improvements when the structure and core technology still meet your needs, but a few identifiable problems get in the way. Examples include oversized images, confusing calls to action, or a mobile layout that needs adjustment.

Consider a redesign

Explore a broader redesign when the site no longer fits the audience, offer, navigation needs, or publishing workflow. Investigate whether the underlying system can support the required changes before deciding on a rebuild.

A useful decision starts with a specific problem.

For a hypothetical service business, a working site with an awkward mobile enquiry page may need a focused layout fix. A site organised around services the business no longer sells may need a broader content and navigation redesign. These are illustrative examples, not KOAT case studies.

Before approving a redesign, plan the transition.

List the pages, content, and integrations you need to retain. Review existing URLs and map redirects where addresses change. Confirm how forms, analytics, bookings, and other essential features will be checked before launch. Keep a recovery plan and a clear owner for approval.

Ask for a written scope covering discovery, design, implementation, testing, handover, and ongoing responsibilities. No fixed fee or timeline should be assumed without an assessment.

Planning for visitors in Suriname and the Netherlands

If you serve either or both markets, test the site under conditions relevant to your actual visitors. Review mobile use, audience languages, and the destinations of enquiry or booking buttons. Do not assume that everyone uses the same device or connection.

An English site may suit part of your audience; Dutch-language content may be needed for other readers and searches. Base that choice on your customers and enquiry data rather than geography alone.

Make the next improvement count.
