LEAD GENERATION & FUNNELS
Generate interest.
Build a path to the right customer.
Lead generation creates opportunities to speak with potential customers. A marketing funnel describes the steps between first interest and a business outcome, such as an agreed project. For service businesses, the goal is not simply more contact details: it is suitable enquiries that your team can qualify, follow up and serve.

This guide explains how to define a good lead before advertising, connect the journey from ad to quotation, and measure why some enquiries become customers while others do not.
01
What is a good lead, and how do you define it before advertising?
A good lead shows a relevant need and enough fit to justify the next conversation. Define that fit together with the people who deliver and sell your service. Use a few practical criteria rather than assuming that every form submission deserves a quotation.
Need and service fit
Can your service address the problem described? Is the enquiry for work you actually provide? Record clear reasons when it falls outside your scope.
Practical fit
Can you serve the location, project scope and timeline? Is the prospect prepared to discuss the investment required? Avoid inventing qualification thresholds before understanding your actual service and costs.
A useful next step
Can you reach the person, understand their role and agree on a relevant conversation? In B2B sales, the first contact may need to involve colleagues before a decision can be made.
Lead versus prospect: agree on the meaning
Businesses use these terms differently. For this guide, a lead is a person or organisation that has shown identifiable interest. A prospect is a lead whose fit has been assessed enough to justify a sales conversation. Neither term means that a purchase is certain. Your team should define its own stages and use them consistently.
- New enquiry: received but not yet assessed.
- Contacted: a follow-up attempt has been recorded.
- Qualified: agreed fit criteria have been checked.
- Quotation: a relevant proposal has been sent.
- Outcome: won, lost, deferred or otherwise closed with a reason.
These are example stages, not a mandatory system. Keep the stages simple enough that your team can maintain accurate records.
Define quality before you buy traffic
Hypothetical example: a service business accepts projects in specified locations and needs a short discovery conversation before preparing a proposal. Its form could ask which service is needed, where the work is required and when the customer hopes to start. The team then confirms scope and fit in conversation. This is a planning example, not a KOAT package or client result.
02
How do you get more quotation requests, from ad to follow-up?
Review the complete journey before increasing traffic. A relevant advert cannot compensate for an unclear offer, a broken form or enquiries nobody follows up. Each step should make the next decision easier for the customer.
Ad or first touchpoint
Describe a real service and the problem it addresses. Make the intended audience understandable and avoid promises that the business cannot substantiate.
Landing page and enquiry
Match the message that brought the visitor to the page. Explain the service, relevant process and next step. Ask for enough information to begin a useful conversation without requiring details you do not yet need.
Response and qualification
Confirm that enquiries reach the right person. Assign an owner, an agreed response target and a way to record the outcome. An acknowledgement can explain what happens next, but it does not replace a relevant human response.
Make the quotation request appropriate to the service
Some services can be quoted from a defined brief; others need discovery before a responsible price can be given. Explain that difference on the page. A button labelled “Request a quote” should lead to a genuine quotation process, not an unrelated download or an unexpected sales step.
- State what information is needed to assess the request.
- Test form completion, confirmation and delivery on mobile and desktop.
- Explain who will respond and any confirmed response expectation.
- Record the original source and service requested where available.
- Agree the next step with the customer rather than sending generic follow-up.
- Prepare quotations only when the necessary scope information is clear.
For B2B lead generation, clarify the contact’s role and how the organisation makes the decision. For businesses serving Suriname and the Netherlands, verify language, service coverage and appropriate contact availability rather than assuming one journey fits both.
Use automation to support the process
Where appropriate, automation can help acknowledge receipt, route an enquiry or remind the responsible person to follow up. First define the process and ownership. Check permissions and customer expectations before adding ongoing promotional messages. Any proposed integration should be verified against the tools and agreed scope.
03
Why do more leads not automatically mean more customers?
Lead volume is only one part of the journey. Relevance, contactability, qualification, proposal fit and follow-up all influence what happens next. More unsuitable enquiries can increase workload without increasing sales, while more suitable enquiries may still exceed your delivery capacity.
Different quality
A broad incentive may increase submissions while attracting people who do not need the service. Review the reasons enquiries fail qualification before celebrating a lower cost per lead.
Gaps after the enquiry
Unanswered messages, unclear proposals or a poor handover can lose interest. Compare campaign results with actual contact and sales records.
Capacity and timing
A qualified prospect may need more time or may not fit your current availability. Record the reason and agree any future contact rather than labelling every delay as an advertising failure.
Compare qualified enquiries and customers
Illustrative calculation: 50 enquiries with a 20% qualification rate produce 10 qualified enquiries. At a 20% qualified-enquiry-to-customer rate, that means two customers. Another campaign with 30 enquiries, a 50% qualification rate and the same closing rate produces three customers. The smaller lead total produces more customers in this example. Compare costs and customer value too; these assumed rates are not benchmarks or forecasts.
Measure the stages that guide a decision
Choose a review period that reflects your sales cycle. Keep definitions and cohorts consistent so recent leads are not judged before they have had time to progress. Note attribution gaps, duplicate enquiries and small samples.
- Completed enquiries, separated from clicks and form starts.
- Qualified enquiries and the documented reasons for poor fit.
- Contact and follow-up status.
- Quotations sent and whether they match the prospect’s need.
- Customers won, with lost or deferred reasons where known.
- Media, management and production costs, compared with relevant customer value.
If you outsource lead generation or funnel work, agree which stages the supplier is responsible for and which belong to your team. Define account access, deliverables, reporting, data handling and costs before work begins. No supplier can guarantee that every lead becomes a customer.
