WEBSHOPS & E-COMMERCE

A webshop that fits.
A journey worth checking.

The right e-commerce platform depends on your products, team, payment requirements, and ongoing budget. Shopify and WooCommerce offer different approaches to running a store; neither is the right choice for every business.

This guide helps you compare them, prepare the buying journey for Black Friday, and investigate abandoned carts without assuming every visitor was ready to buy.

01

Shopify or WooCommerce: which fits your business?

Begin with the requirements: your catalogue, markets, shipping, payment methods, integrations, and who will maintain the store. Then compare the platforms against those needs.

Shopify: a hosted approach

Shopify provides a hosted commerce platform with themes and apps. It can suit a team that prefers managed platform infrastructure. Check the plan, required apps, payment options, and whether the customisations you need are supported. Your team still owns content, configuration, testing, and daily operations.

WooCommerce: a WordPress approach

WooCommerce is an open-source commerce platform built on WordPress. It can suit businesses that need close integration with an existing WordPress site or a tailored setup. Hosting, updates, backups, and extension compatibility need clear ownership, whether managed internally or by a provider.

Compare the platforms’ own explanations: Shopify’s online-store platform and what WooCommerce is.

Compare the full cost, not just the entry price.

Include initial design and implementation, product setup, recurring platform or hosting fees, apps or extensions, payment charges, maintenance, and ongoing support. A migration may also involve content and integration work. No verified KOAT webshop fee or package is supplied here, so request a proposal with clear inclusions and recurring costs.

Check payments before choosing a platform.

For a business in Suriname or the Netherlands, confirm provider eligibility for your business location, required payment methods, payout arrangements, and currencies. Customer location and merchant eligibility are different questions. Do not assume a payment service is available merely because the platform supports international selling.

Shopify publishes country-specific Shopify Payments eligibility. Verify the chosen provider’s current requirements before committing. Make the same check for any WooCommerce payment extension.

Your Black Friday webshop checklist

Before increasing traffic, check the journey customers will encounter. Confirm the campaign offer, stock, deadlines, and conditions first. Do not promise a discount, delivery date, or quantity that the business cannot support.

Product pages

Check product names, images, variants, availability, prices, and useful specifications. Make delivery and return information easy to find. Explain the promotion clearly and verify that the displayed offer matches the actual checkout.

Cart and checkout

Test product changes, discount codes, shipping options, address fields, and every enabled payment method. Check the final total and error messages. Test on mobile as well as desktop, including the payment return and order confirmation.

Order fulfilment

Verify stock handling, order notifications, delivery settings, and customer-service responsibilities. Decide who watches for payment failures and overselling. Confirm that your team can handle the demand you are planning for.

Follow-up

Test confirmation messages and any planned cart or checkout reminders. Check eligibility, consent requirements, timing, links, and stop conditions. Prevent reminders after a completed purchase, and avoid messages with outdated stock or offers.

Finish a test purchase, not just a visual review.

A checkout can look correct while a payment, notification, or shipping rule fails. Use the provider’s supported testing method, then verify the whole order path. Keep a record of what was checked and make sure test orders do not trigger unintended fulfilment.

03

Why do customers abandon their carts?

Possible reasons include unexpected costs, unsuitable delivery options, missing product information, payment trouble, or a checkout that is difficult to use. Some visitors are comparing products or saving items for later. These are hypotheses to investigate, not conclusions about your customers.

Define what you are measuring.

A cart and an abandoned checkout are not the same stage. A shopper can add an item without ever entering checkout. Define the events, time window, and denominator before reporting an abandonment rate. Decide how returning purchases are counted, and check for missing or duplicated events.

Review the journey from product view to cart, checkout, payment, and confirmed order. Reconcile recorded purchases with actual orders. A tracking problem can create an apparent drop-off that is not a real buying problem.

Find the friction before choosing a fix.

Compare relevant devices, traffic sources, products, and delivery destinations where the data is sufficient. Check error logs and payment failures, repeat the journey yourself, and review customer-service questions. Ask willing customers what information they could not find.

For example, a hypothetical shop seeing mobile payment errors should investigate that fault before adding a discount reminder. A shop whose customers repeatedly ask about shipping costs may need clearer delivery information. Neither example proves the cause of abandonment in your store.

Test one meaningful improvement.

Start with an evidence-backed issue: an error, unclear shipping information, a missing payment option, or a confusing field. Record the change, compare an appropriate period or controlled test, and consider traffic and campaign differences. Do not promise a conversion increase from a single design adjustment.

Shopify documents its abandoned-checkout recovery workflow. Availability and message eligibility depend on the setup. A reminder cannot replace a functioning checkout.
